Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Wake It All Up

No standing about in a static stretch — we get moving to music straight away, swinging the arms, rolling the spine and lifting the heart rate, because jazz demands attack from count one and the warm-up goes hunting for it.

10–25 mins

Technique on the Spot

Next comes the vocabulary that reads unmistakably as jazz: reaching lines that finish past the fingertips, quick isolations of rib and head, and the strong core lift that stops a pirouette collapsing. Slow and precise, so nothing lands vague.

25–40 mins

Across the Room

The work starts travelling — battements, split leaps and turning combinations flung along the diagonal in twos and threes. Moving in small groups is where shyness burns off and the big, space-hungry side of jazz gets room to breathe.

40–50 mins

Build the Routine

A choreographed number set to a show tune or chart hit extends a little each week, carrying the expression, the changes of level and the light and shade that make an audience believe it. This is jazz doing the job it was made for.

50–60 mins

Sharpen and Wind Down

We spend the closing minutes cleaning the routine until it truly holds, then bring everything down slowly with a long stretch through the hips, hamstrings and lower back so you leave supple rather than sore.

About Jazz Classes in Southampton

Think of almost any routine you have caught under stage lights — the touring musical, the pop spectacular, the trophy-night showstopper — and jazz is the engine beneath it. Born in the dance halls and stage revues of the last century, it kept one instinct above all others: to reach outward and be read from the very back of the room. We treat it as proper technique carrying proper performance.

Southampton wears this well. The Mayflower on Commercial Road — the grand listed Art Deco house that pulls West End tours, ballet and big dance shows down to the south coast — anchors a real theatre quarter, and its Mayflower Studios on Above Bar Street hold three spaces for rehearsal, youth and community work. We base our classes in that quarter around Guildhall Square, naming your exact studio when you book.

Touching your toes is not a condition of entry — the range comes on gradually as the class works it into you, so turn up as tight as you please. Save the jazz shoes for later and dance the early weeks in clean trainers. The main floor mixes every adult age, under-18s learn in bands by age, and a single class is £8.

Why Choose Jazz in Southampton?

On the Theatre's Doorstep

Our rooms sit in Southampton's theatre quarter, a few streets from the Mayflower and its studios where real touring shows load in. Rehearsing a stage style beside a stage that hosts the genuine article gives the work a point the mirror never could.

Written to Be Watched

This is no inward, private style — it exists to face front. You drill projection, dynamics and the clean finish of a move from the start, so what you carry out is the ability to deliver a routine, not merely recall the steps.

Start Stiff, That's Fine

Neither jazz shoes nor a gymnast's flexibility is wanted on your first night. Trainers see you through early on, and the reaching lines and high kicks turn up bit by bit as the warm-ups open you out.

Any Age Can Begin

DBS-checked teachers take under-18s in age-banded groups, and the adult class welcomes everyone from late teens deep into retirement. Because jazz trades on musicality and control, a later start is no handicap at all.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Learning to Stand Tall

The Groundwork

The opening weeks are all alignment, simple isolations and teaching the body to switch between sharp and smooth on command. Plain stuff, and the platform every flashy move later relies on — expect to feel awkward and to sharpen up fast.

Kit for Night One

Wear something fitted enough to show your shape — leggings and a snug top — with everyday trainers underneath. A pair of jazz shoes can wait until you are certain you are sticking with it.

Month 2–3

Spinning and Leaping

Eating Up Space

Travelling steps arrive — turn preparations, chaînés and leaps thrown down the diagonal to devour the floor. The graft here is spotting a clean turn and landing a jump without a thud.

Phrasing the Music

You begin to ride the song rather than merely count it — snatching an accent, sitting on a shape a beat longer — so a sequence starts to look performed instead of ticked off.

Month 4–6

Real Numbers

Choreography With Length

Routines grow, flip their facing and change height, stretching your memory as hard as your legs. All those separate drills from the term finally knit into something that looks like a stage piece.

Finding the Finish

Sharper kicks, cleaner stops, and the moment jazz shoes genuinely earn their place. What divides a beginner from a dancer here is polish, and polish is the target.

Month 6+

Stage-Ready

The Full Toolkit

Doubles, held extensions and leaps with height and a quiet landing — the kind of material that would survive a real audition panel or a live crowd.

Where You Take It

On to auditions, commercial or musical-theatre work, or a neighbouring class riding a dependable jazz base. Many simply stay for the thrill of nailing a number.

Jazz in Southampton FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I have to be flexible to start jazz? +

Not at all — flexibility is a gift the class gives you over the weeks, not an entry requirement. The warm-ups steadily open you out, and we fully expect newcomers to arrive stiff. You stretch into the style as you go rather than needing to bend before you begin.

What should I wear, and are jazz shoes essential? +

Wear something that shows your line — fitted leggings and a close top — with clean trainers to begin. Jazz shoes become worthwhile once you have decided to stay; for your first weeks, trainers cover everything you will be asked to do.

Where in Southampton are the jazz classes? +

In the theatre quarter around Guildhall Square, close to the Mayflower on Commercial Road and Mayflower Studios on Above Bar Street. The precise studio is named on booking, with Southampton Central and Westquay parking within easy reach.

What does a jazz class in Southampton cost? +

£8 to drop in, no membership and nothing to sign. When your studio's weekly slot beds in, cheaper blocks open for regulars — but you can always just pay your £8 and dance whenever the mood takes you.

Will jazz help if musical theatre is my goal? +

Hugely. Strip the singing and acting from a musical-theatre number and jazz is what is left moving underneath, so the turns, the projection and the crisp lines you build here are already half of that world. A lot of our dancers treat the class as exactly that launchpad.

Is there a Southampton link to what we learn? +

Very much so. The Mayflower brings in touring musicals and dance built on this exact movement language, and Mayflower Studios runs its own youth and rehearsal programme. Learning jazz a few streets away keeps it tied to the shows it actually serves.

Do I ever have to get up and perform? +

Purely by choice. If a showcase appeals we will point a routine toward one, but plenty of people come only for the technique and the sweat, and no one is ever nudged onto a stage against their wishes.

Is jazz only for children, or can adults join? +

Adults make up most of the main floor, from late teens to past seventy, while under-18s have their own age-banded classes. Jazz suits a grown-up beginner because it rewards timing and control every bit as much as youthful spring.

How does jazz differ from contemporary and commercial? +

Contemporary draws inward and toward the floor; jazz throws itself outward and presents. Commercial, meanwhile, is jazz's offspring, lifting its turns and punch for pop and video work. Get a jazz base and you are already part-way into both of those rooms.
