Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Switch On the Attitude
We loosen shoulders, hips and wrists with a playful warm-up set to something brassy, and quietly park the self-consciousness at the door. By the end of it the room is already trading grins, which is half the battle in a style that lives on cheek.
The Burlesque Walk
Everything begins with how you cross the floor. We drill the slow, weighted stroll — hips leading, chin level, eyeline steady — until an ordinary walk turns into an entrance that owns the space long before a single feather moves.
Fans, Gloves and Cheek
Out come the props. We teach the classic glove peel, the feather-fan reveal-and-hide and a little chair work, breaking each flourish into a slow count so the timing lands and the tease reads all the way to the back of the room.
Build the Tease
The moves link into a short routine with a proper beginning, a slow-burn middle and a cheeky button at the end. We rehearse where to hold, where to drop the shoulder and where to let the audience wait — the withhold is the whole point.
Full Number and Wind-Down
We run the finished tease a couple of times with the music and the lights of your imagination, then ease off with some gentle stretches. You leave with a routine in your pocket and a good deal more front than you walked in with.
About Burlesque Classes in Middlesbrough
Burlesque is the art of the wink and the withhold — a cabaret craft built on timing, character and the confidence to hold a room's attention rather than any particular acrobatic feat. In our sessions that means shimmies, a knowing chair routine, feather-fan sweeps and the theatrical peel of a glove, all pinned to a big-band or brassy pop track. Nothing comes off that you would not wear on a night out; the tease is entirely in the attitude, the eye contact and the pause before the reveal.
Middlesbrough has never been short of front, and that Ironopolis swagger is exactly what burlesque runs on. The independent cabaret and drag nights that pop up around the Baker Street and Bedford Street bars have given the town a genuine appetite for a bit of feathered theatre, and our burlesque dance classes in Middlesbrough tap straight into that cheeky, self-deprecating Smoggie humour. We take our cue from that local scene as inspiration only — we are not tied to any bar, promoter or troupe, and we name them purely to place the class in its home town.
You do not need rhythm, a leotard or a scrap of prior experience — most people arrive a little nervous and leave grinning. Wear something you can move in with a heel you trust, or flats if you prefer, and bring a pair of gloves if you own them. Your studio around the town centre or the Linthorpe side is confirmed the moment you book, and every drop-in stays a flat £8 with no block-booking or contract in sight.

Why Choose Burlesque in Middlesbrough?
Confidence You Keep
Burlesque teaches you to take up space and enjoy being looked at, on your own terms. Dancers tell us the swagger does not stay in the studio — it turns up at work, at parties and in the mirror on a Monday morning.
Every Body, Celebrated
This is a style that has always championed real bodies of every shape, age and size. There is no ideal silhouette to chase here — the routine is built to flatter whoever is doing it, and the room is warm about it from the first class.
Poise and Posture
All that slow, controlled movement quietly rebuilds how you carry yourself. The lifted chest, the long neck and the deliberate pace become second nature, and good posture is the sort of thing your back thanks you for years later.
A Proper Night's Laugh
More than anything it is fun. A burlesque hour is loud, giggly and gloriously silly, and it makes a cracking one-off with friends — the reason so many groups book it for a birthday or a big-do warm-up.
Your Burlesque Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding Your Front
Attitude Before Steps
The first few weeks are all about permission — permission to pose, to hold a look and to enjoy it. We keep the choreography light so you can concentrate on the swagger, which is where burlesque actually lives.
What to Bring
Comfy kit you can shimmy in, a heel you trust or flats, and gloves if you have them. Everything else is provided, and there is genuinely nothing to reveal beyond a bit of personality.
Props and Play
Fans and Feathers
You start handling the classic burlesque props with real control — the fan flourish, the glove peel, the chair pose — and learn to make each one land on the beat rather than rushing through it.
Linking It Up
Individual flourishes join into short teasing phrases, and you build the stamina to stay in character across a whole routine instead of dropping the act the moment the counting gets tricky.
Becoming the Act
Your Stage Persona
This is where you shape a character — the sultry one, the comic one, the diva — and let it colour every move. The same steps read completely differently once there is a personality driving them.
Timing the Tease
We sharpen the pauses and the payoffs so the number breathes, teaching you to read a room and stretch the anticipation. Well-placed patience is what separates a routine from a real tease.
Feathers Out
Perform or Just Glow
Some dancers go on to a showcase or a cabaret slot; plenty simply keep coming for the weekly lift it gives them. Both are the right answer, and there is never any pressure to step onto a stage.
Bring the Group
Once you have the bug, a private burlesque session is a favourite for hen dos and birthdays. Tell us the group and the vibe and we build a cheeky one-off around it.
Burlesque in Middlesbrough FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any dance experience? +
None at all. Most of our burlesque dancers have never taken a class before, and the whole session is pitched at absolute beginners. We break every flourish down slowly and repeat it as often as the room needs.
What actually happens in a burlesque class? +
You learn the burlesque walk, a bit of chair work, and classic prop flourishes like the glove peel and feather-fan reveal, then string them into a short cheeky routine. It is all about character, timing and confidence rather than athletic tricks.
Is there any actual stripping? +
No. Nothing comes off beyond a glove or a feather fan, and you stay in whatever you are comfortable wearing throughout. Burlesque is the art of the tease and the suggestion — the reveal is all attitude, never undress.
What should I wear? +
Something you can move freely in — leggings and a fitted top work well — plus a heel you feel steady in, or flats if you prefer. Bring gloves if you own a pair. Nothing special is required for your first class.
Where in Middlesbrough are the classes held? +
In studios around the town centre near Centre Square or over on the Linthorpe and Acklam side, confirmed when you book so you know exactly where to go. We keep to central Middlesbrough rather than the separate Tees Valley towns.
How much does a class cost? +
Every drop-in is a flat £8, paid per session. There are no blocks to buy, no membership and no contract — come the weeks that suit you and skip the ones that do not.
Is there an upper age limit? +
Our adult classes run from 17 right up to 75, and burlesque in particular draws a lovely spread of ages. Confidence has nothing to do with a birthday, and the room reflects that.
I'm not a dancer's shape — will I fit in? +
Absolutely. Burlesque has celebrated every body going since long before body positivity was a hashtag, and the choreography is built to flatter whoever is performing it. You will be in good, warm company.
Can I book a private group? +
Yes — a private burlesque session is one of our most-requested hen and birthday bookings. You can also grab a one-off through our burlesque hen party in Middlesbrough for a self-contained group class. Tell us your numbers and we will sort it.
