Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm the Body Long

We open with a proper stretch-and-strengthen — spine, hips, ankles and core — because jazz asks for both looseness and control, and cold muscles give you neither.

10–22 mins

Isolations and Placement

Head, ribs, shoulders and hips learn to move one at a time over a still centre. It feels odd at first and then unlocks nearly everything jazz does.

22–38 mins

Travelling Steps and Turns

Jazz walks, chassés, pas de bourrée and the first pirouettes cross the floor, with spotting drilled so the room stops spinning around you.

38–50 mins

Build the Combination

The pieces gather into a short jazz number with real dynamics — sharp accents, held lines and the swing between them — set to music you will recognise.

50–60 mins

Run It and Stretch Out

We run the combination full-out a couple of times so it starts to feel like performing, then cool the legs and back down before you leave.

About Jazz Classes in Middlesbrough

Jazz has quietly had a home in Middlesbrough for years through The Loft Studios on Linthorpe Road, whose timetable already runs modern, commercial and musical-theatre work alongside its street and tap streams. Our jazz classes in Middlesbrough sit next to that, aimed squarely at adults and older teens who want the classic jazz vocabulary — isolations, layouts, pirouettes and jazz walks — taught slowly enough to actually own. We are independent and not affiliated with The Loft; we just think a town with that much dance already going deserves another honest door in.

Jazz is the connective tissue of nearly every stage style. It is the language underneath a chorus number, a competition routine and a lot of commercial choreography, which is why building a clean jazz base makes everything else you might try later easier. We work through the pillars — centre control, spotting, contraction and release, and the sharp-then-fluid phrasing that gives jazz its swing — before layering them into a routine you can perform.

The class runs on the central side of town, a short walk from Middlesbrough railway station, with no tram to factor in — you come in by train or bus and walk the last few minutes. Barefoot, jazz shoes or trainers all work to start; there is nothing to buy up front. It is £8 on the day with no term and no membership, and if getting into the centre is awkward we will bring jazz out to you across Teesside — Acklam, Marton, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham and Ormesby included.

Why Choose Jazz in Middlesbrough?

The Base Every Stage Style Sits On

Learn jazz and you are halfway into musical theatre, commercial and heels. The isolations, turns and lines here are the shared grammar the rest of those styles borrow from.

Grown-Up Beginner Room

This is built for adults and teens starting fresh, not for dancers who trained as kids. Nobody expects splits in week one; the pace assumes you have never done a pirouette.

Musicality, Not Just Steps

We spend real time on how movement rides the music — where to hit, where to lengthen — so you dance the song rather than just perform a memorised order of shapes.

Come-to-You Across Teesside

Prefer a private group or a class closer to home? We take jazz out to Linthorpe, Acklam, Marton and the wider Teesside area for schools, studios and private bookings.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Centre and Isolations

In the room

The first month is placement and isolation work — standing tall over your own centre and moving one part at a time cleanly.

By the end

You can run a set of isolations in time and hold a balanced jazz stance without wobbling off it.

Month 2

Across the Floor

In the room

Travelling steps and single turns get real attention, with spotting drilled until your head leads and your body follows.

By the end

You cross the floor with jazz walks and chassés and land a single pirouette more often than not.

Months 3–5

Dynamics and Lines

In the room

We chase quality — pointed feet, stretched lines, the sharp-to-smooth phrasing that separates jazz from just marking steps.

By the end

You perform a full combination with genuine light and shade instead of one flat volume.

Month 6+

Performing It

In the room

Longer numbers, layout and level changes, and the confidence to project rather than concentrate.

By the end

You dance a routine out to the room like it is a stage, which is exactly where jazz wants to be.

Jazz in Middlesbrough FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Middlesbrough are the jazz classes held? +

On the central side of town, a short walk from Middlesbrough railway station and the bus station. There is no tram serving Middlesbrough, so you arrive by train or bus and walk the last stretch into the centre.

How much is a jazz class? +

£8, paid on the day. No sign-up fee, no block to purchase ahead and no term you are committed to — you cover the single session you turn up for and nothing more.

Do I need any dance background? +

None at all. The room is built for adult and teen beginners, and we assume no prior training — every turn, isolation and jazz walk is taught from the very first step.

What should I wear on my feet? +

To begin with, jazz shoes, ballet-style slippers, socks or clean trainers are all fine. Once you are sure you are staying, jazz shoes give the best line, but there is nothing you must buy to start.

Isn't jazz just for kids who've trained for years? +

Not here. Plenty of people start jazz as adults — the vocabulary is completely learnable later in life, and an adult beginners' class moves at a pace that assumes you are new to it.

How is jazz different from ballet or contemporary? +

Ballet is the formal base, contemporary is the floor-and-release end, and jazz sits between them with more attack, rhythm and showmanship — think stage numbers and sharp musical accents rather than either extreme.

Will it help with musical theatre or commercial? +

Directly. Jazz is the shared foundation both lean on, so the isolations, turns and lines you build here transfer straight into a musical-theatre or commercial routine later.

Can you teach jazz to our group or studio? +

Yes — we bring jazz out across Teesside, to Linthorpe, Acklam, Marton, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham and Ormesby. Add your venue to the enquiry form and we will arrange it.

Do you offer jazz for children and teenagers? +

We do, in age-banded groups with DBS-checked teachers kept separate from the adult session. Note the dancer's age on the form and we will direct you to the right class.
