Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Straight Into It
No slow build — the dancing starts at once, with a warm-up that frees the joints and drops you into the groove of the track. That constant bounce underneath every street style is already ticking over before the first minute's gone.
This Week's Style
Every session picks one style and burrows in — the sharp holds of locking, the hits of popping, house footwork or breaking's top rock — so across four weeks you sample the entire clan.
Piecing the Routine
The week's moves accumulate into a short routine set over breaks lifted from funk, hip-hop and house. We loop it until it beds into the muscles and the counting drops away on its own.
Off the Page
Then the freestyle games, danced with nothing rehearsed. That leap from copying steps to making up your own is the precise moment the whole thing tips over into real dancing.
Round the Circle
An easy-going cypher — jump in or hang back — where you can let rip for a crowd that'll roar at anything, capped with a proper stretch to send you home loose.
About Street Dance Classes in Nottingham
Street dance is less a single style than an extended family — the catch-all for everything hatched in clubs, at house parties and on street corners rather than in front of a studio mirror: popping, locking, breaking, house and a sprawl of cousins. Our Nottingham classes take in the lot, led by people still dancing out in the scene, so you get a proper go at each before committing. The ages blend too, with separate kids', teens' and adults' groups — and in our street dance classes in Nottingham, walking in green is simply the norm.
Nottingham earns its place here. This is a city that takes its music seriously: Rock City, the legendary Talbot Street venue that threw open its doors in 1980, hosted early UK dates for Nirvana, Guns N' Roses and the Pixies, and the place keeps producing its own — Jake Bugg, Sleaford Mods, Young T & Bugsey. A pair of major universities holds the crowd young and the creative quarters lively, and Hockley — the knot of indie bars, galleries and record shops long nicknamed 'Nottingham's Soho' — is where a good chunk of that spark gathers.
You need nothing to get going — it all launches off a bounce you'll have within a minute or two. Studios cluster round the centre by Old Market Square, up through Hockley and the Lace Market, and out towards Beeston and the universities, each one a short walk or a single NET tram hop from the next, while our mobile crew covers the rest of greater Nottingham. Just bring trainers and clothes you can throw around.

Why Choose Street Dance in Nottingham?
A City Built on Music
Nottingham lives on live sound, from Rock City on Talbot Street to homegrown names like Jake Bugg and Sleaford Mods. A style this deeply rooted in rhythm drops neatly into a place that's spent decades hurling itself at a beat.
A Fair Crack at Every Branch
Over a term you put real hours into each corner — popping, locking, house, breaking — enough to feel the contrasts yourself and pick a direction deliberately instead of falling into one at random.
Six Years Old and Upward
Age-banded groups run from six up, every last one led by a DBS-checked coach. The children's sessions are the busiest thing on our books, and the jitterier adults tend to thaw into it every bit as quickly.
Young Crowd, Open Door
With the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent both in town, the creative streets around Hockley stay busy and easy to walk into — so a stage, a jam or an audience to test yourself on is seldom far off when you fancy one.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Landing the Groove
The Opening Weeks
Day one is the bounce and the rock, brushed with a little top rock and some locking. To start with it's purely about catching the groove and dropping the nerves — the exact, clean shapes can bide their time.
What to Turn Up In
Loose bottoms, a tee and flat trainers with a bit of spring in them. Comfort leads; from there the culture thrives on personal style, so truly, wear whatever sits most like you.
Getting Acquainted
Laying Foundations
You push further into each strand one at a time — locking, popping, house, breaking — sussing out what each demands of the body and which ones land for you fastest.
Your First Freestyle
A little steered improvising grows the nerve to move with no plan under you — the one skill the entire edifice of street dance is propped up on.
Something of Your Own
A Style Surfaces
Freestyles run on longer, routines stiffen up, and the earliest sparks of movement that's plainly yours begin poking through.
Belonging
The circle quits feeling like an exam and starts feeling like your own kitchen; by this point you're a genuine part of the crew, enlisted in a culture rather than just turning up to a class.
Out in the Scene
Match-Fit
Comfortable across every strand, unruffled when a battle erupts, and knitting together combinations of your own making — the invention this culture rates over everything else.
The Next Move
The city's jams and battles to throw yourself at, our own in-house contests for a real nerve test, or diving headlong into whichever strand has properly caught you.
Street Dance in Nottingham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any experience to walk in? +
Not a scrap. The class kicks off on the bounce — a groove you'll have inside a minute — and builds from there. Glance around a beginners' session and you'll see barely anyone has danced before either.
What's the difference between this and your hip-hop class? +
Street's the wide umbrella, rotating through popping, house, locking, breaking and the rest across a term. Hip-hop tightens right down to hip-hop itself — its grooves, its party dances, its choreography. Loads of dancers take both and find one feeds the other.
Which ages do you teach in Nottingham? +
Adults span 17 to 75. There's a separate teens' group for 15- and 16-year-olds, then a 9–14 band and a 6–8 band beneath it, each with a DBS-checked coach. Note your age on the form and we'll aim you at the right session.
Whereabouts in Nottingham are the classes? +
At partner studios around the centre by Old Market Square, up in Hockley and the Lace Market, and out towards Beeston, with the children's groups spreading further across greater Nottingham. Each sits a short walk or NET tram hop from town, and your precise address follows once you've enrolled.
How much does it cost? +
£8 a drop-in, nothing to join and no contract holding you in place — come along whenever it works. Cheaper blocks turn up down the line, once your nearest studio settles on its regular weekly time.
What should I wear? +
Loose, movable clothing and flat trainers with a little cushioning. Past that, self-expression is the entire spirit of the thing, so honestly — turn up as whatever feels most you, that's rather the whole point.
Will I get to learn breaking? +
You will. The breaking weeks cover top rock, footwork, freezes and drops to the floor, right beside house, popping and locking. If it grabs hold, Nottingham's young scene around Hockley and the two universities is there to plunge into, and we'll point you at it.
What makes Nottingham a good place for street dance? +
Music and youth, above all. It's a card-carrying music city — Rock City, Jake Bugg, Sleaford Mods, Young T & Bugsey — with two big universities keeping Hockley and the creative quarters young, busy and welcoming to anyone who fancies a go.
Can you bring sessions to schools and venues around Nottingham? +
We can. Our travelling team runs school assemblies, birthday parties and youth-club workshops right across greater Nottingham and Nottinghamshire — Beeston, West Bridgford, Arnold, Hucknall, Mansfield and beyond. Drop your venue on the enquiry form and we'll sort it from there.
