Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Posture

We wake up the spine, hips and shoulders and set the grounded, lifted posture belly dance works from. Gentle, mobilising and a world away from anything strenuous.

10–25 mins

Isolations

The heart of the technique — learning to move the hips while the chest stays quiet, and the chest while the hips stay still. Slow, precise and oddly satisfying to crack.

25–40 mins

Shimmies & Layers

The shimmer everyone pictures, built from a small, fast movement and then layered over a step. We take it in stages so it arrives without frustration.

40–50 mins

Arms & Travelling

Soft, framing arms and simple travelling patterns that turn isolations into dancing. A veil comes out here if you fancy it — entirely optional.

50–60 mins

A Short Routine

We thread the moves into a little sequence to music and run it through, then cool down and stretch. No one is ever singled out to perform alone.

About Belly Dance Classes in Nottingham

Belly dance is far more technical than its costume suggests. Beneath the shimmer sits raqs sharqi, an Egyptian art built on isolation — moving one part of the body while everything else holds still, so a hip can drop while the shoulders stay perfectly level. Our Nottingham classes teach that control slowly and honestly, true to the dance's Egyptian and Turkish roots.

Few dances are as easy to walk into. Belly dance makes no demand about age, height or body shape — it bends to fit the dancer rather than the other way round, and nobody is ever pushed to perform on their own. That suits Nottingham, an easy-going, mixed city where a room of every shape and age is simply an ordinary evening.

The rewards outlast any single routine. All that slow, deliberate control quietly works the deep muscles that hold you upright, and within a month most people notice they carry themselves better without trying. And since the centre is flat, compact and a short step from the trams on Station Street, getting to class asks about as little of you as the warm-up does.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Nottingham?

Every Body, Every Age

Belly dance adapts to the person dancing, not the reverse. Height, age and shape are simply not the point, which makes it one of the most welcoming rooms we run.

Isolation & Control

The real skill is fine control — moving one part while the rest stays still. It is quietly addictive to master and unlike anything else you will have tried.

A Quiet Core Workout

All that slow, deliberate movement leans on the deep postural muscles, so you leave standing taller and, over weeks, carrying yourself with more ease.

Shimmer on Your Terms

Cover up or dress up — it is entirely your call. Nobody is asked to bare their stomach, and no one is ever put on the spot to solo in front of the room.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

First Isolations

Getting Started

The posture and your first hip and chest isolations, taught slowly so the control has time to click into place.

What to Wear

Comfortable clothes you can move in, with a scarf or coin belt on the hips if you have one to make the movement easier to see. Bare feet or soft shoes.

Month 2–3

Building the Vocabulary

Shimmies

The signature shimmer, built from a small fast movement and then held steady while you do other things at the same time.

Layering

Combining an isolation with a step, the point at which separate moves start to feel like genuine dancing.

Month 4–6

Making It Flow

Arms & Expression

Framing arms, soft hands and the beginnings of the storytelling quality that lifts belly dance above pure technique.

Travelling

Moving isolations around the floor in simple patterns, so the dance covers space rather than staying rooted to one spot.

Month 6+

Dancing It

Full Routines

Longer sequences to music that string the whole vocabulary together into something that flows and expresses.

Where Next

Specialising in a style, adding a veil or drum solo, or simply keeping the poise, core strength and calm the practice brings.

Belly Dance in Nottingham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Can I start belly dance with no experience at all? +

Yes — the beginner classes are built for exactly that. Every isolation is taught from scratch and taken slowly, so you never need any dance background. Most people in the room are brand-new to it, learning the very same first moves you are.

My body looks nothing like a dancer's — will that hold me back? +

Not for a moment. Belly dance is famous for adapting to every body — it asks nothing about your height, age or shape, and it flatters and works with whatever you bring. Ours is genuinely one of the most body-welcoming classes going.

Will I be expected to show my stomach? +

Never. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in — leggings and a loose top are perfectly normal. The bare-midriff look belongs to performance costume, not to a class, and plenty of our regulars stay covered up the whole time.

So what exactly is raqs sharqi? +

It is the Egyptian dance form at the root of what most people call belly dance — an art of controlled isolation and expressive, flowing movement. We teach it with respect for its Egyptian and Turkish origins rather than as a fitness gimmick.

Where in Nottingham are the belly dance sessions held? +

At partner studios around the city centre, a short and level walk from Nottingham station and the NET tram on Station Street. The exact venue is confirmed when you book, and the flat, compact centre makes getting there straightforward.

How much does a belly dance class in Nottingham cost? +

Drop-in sessions are £8, with no membership and no contract to sign. Once your local studio has a regular weekly timetable in place, discounted block bookings come in for anyone who wants to dance every week.

Can men come along too? +

They are welcome. While our classes tend to draw more women, belly dance has a long male tradition and nobody is turned away. If you are curious, come and try it — the isolation technique is fascinating whoever is doing it.

Is this genuinely good for the core? +

It really is. The slow, controlled isolations recruit the deep abdominal and back muscles that keep you upright, so belly dance builds core strength and posture almost as a side effect of the movement itself.

Have I left it too late in life to take this up? +

Not at all — our adult classes run to seventy-five, and people take up belly dance in their fifties and sixties regularly. It is low-impact, kind to the joints and paced to the person, which makes it a very forgiving place to start later on.
