Feet and Rhythm Awake
Tap happens entirely from the ankles down, so we open by warming the calves, feet and ankles, then clap a few bars round the group. Your body and your timing switch on together, which is exactly the order tap wants them in.
The Building-Block Sounds
Every number you'll ever dance is spelt from a small alphabet of noises — the tap, the shuffle, the flap, the ball-change. We rehearse them unhurried, chasing one clean note apiece, because at this stage a crisp sound counts for far more than a fast one.
Assembling a Time Step
From those building blocks we put together the time step, the little signature phrase that trails tappers around wherever they go. Loop it enough and your feet keep it turning over by themselves while your head wanders off.
Set to a Track
The fragments gather into a short routine over a song. The trick is to strike each beat squarely while keeping every sound light and pinging rather than heavy and flattened into the floor.
Trading Fours and Cooling Down
We wrap up with a spot of call-and-response — lobbing rhythms round the circle — then stretch out the calves and ankles that shouldered all the effort.
About Tap Classes in Nottingham
The strange, wonderful catch with tap is that you're producing the music as you dance to it. Those metal plates bolted beneath your shoes are the instrument, and a routine is just tiny sounds stacked up — a flap, a shuffle, a ball-change, a time step. In our tap dance classes in Nottingham you begin on one solitary note and, over the weeks, grow it into whole bars.
It's that same crisp rattle you catch whenever a touring musical rolls into the Theatre Royal — Nottingham's ornate Victorian receiving house, finished in 1865 — or the neighbouring Royal Concert Hall. Our sessions run at partner studios about the city centre, in rooms chosen for their hard, sprung floors, so that none of your carefully-made sounds vanishes into carpet or a lifeless surface.
Arrive with nothing whatsoever, tap shoes least of all. A rack of loan pairs will see you through the early weeks, letting you try the whole thing before spending a penny. Wear something you can move about in, pack a little patience for the climb, and the rest looks after itself as your feet begin to twig.

Why Choose Tap in Nottingham?
The Band Is Your Feet
In a tap studio the silence only cracks when your feet crack it — performer and percussion section in the one body. Turning into a one-person rhythm outfit is peculiarly moreish the instant it starts to click.
Try Before You Spend
There's no trip to a shop first. Our loan pairs cover the opening weeks, so you get to find out whether tap grabs you before any of your own money changes hands.
A Workout Upstairs
Keeping rhythm, footwork and a routine spinning in your mind together taxes the brain quite as much as the legs — and it's that all-consuming focus that quietly hooks so many people.
The Noise Behind the Shows
Every touring musical that pulls into the Theatre Royal is riding on this sound. Once your own two feet can conjure it, those West End and Hollywood routines stop reading as magic and start reading as steps.
Your Tap Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The First Sounds
Starting Point
Slow taps, shuffles and flaps, hunting one clear note out of each. Tempo doesn't matter a jot yet — a tidy sound and a chuckle at the fumbles is the whole aim to begin with.
What to Wear Day One
Anything you can move in. Own a pair of tap shoes? Perfect. If not, lift a loan pair off the rack. A stiff-soled shoe scrapes through a taster; a soft trainer just gags every note.
Locked to the Count
Fresh Material
Time steps, shuffle ball-changes and short strings of them bed in over an even count. Soon your feet see off whole stretches unaided and your gaze can lift clear off the floorboards.
Where the Swing Lives
Free up the ankle and the notes start to lilt and lean instead of thudding down square. That's the instant dry repetition tips over into something that truly sounds like tap.
Full Numbers
Broader Toolkit
Pull-backs, riffs and paddle-and-rolls work their way into longer routines, and your pace and your stamina both creep upward as the phrases keep growing.
Bending the Beat
You start moulding the sound — leaning into accents, sitting a whisker before or after the beat — phrasing like a player rather than a drum machine.
Let Loose
Improvising
Passing phrases about the room, sneaking a couple of self-made bars into a routine, and keeping your footing steady inside a group piece.
The Road On
Faster rhythm tap and hoofing, a place in a showcase or a troupe, or bolting jazz on alongside to broaden what you carry onto a stage.
Tap in Nottingham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I've never done any tap — will I cope as a beginner? +
Easily. We open on single sounds and grow outward, and virtually everyone in a beginners' room started from that same blank slate. You don't need to walk in with rhythm; supplying it is the whole job of the class.
Is it true you lend out the shoes? +
It is — that's what the loan rack exists for. Borrow ours for the first handful of weeks and only buy your own once you're certain tap's got you. No point buying kit for something you might not keep up.
What do I wear to a class? +
Comfortable clothes you can move freely in. For footwear, take a loan pair from us at first — a hard sole limps you through a taster, whereas a cushioned trainer smothers the sound the second you try to make one.
What's the cost of a tap class in Nottingham? +
£8 for a drop-in, easing down a little when you book a block once the weekly slot's locked. Nothing to sign up to and no membership — you turn up on the weeks that fit around you.
Which part of Nottingham do you run tap in? +
At partner studios dotted around the city centre, all a short walk from the railway station and the NET tram. Your exact room arrives with your booking, every one picked for a hard, sprung floor that lets each tap ring clean.
People keep mentioning a 'time step' — what is that? +
It's the little trademark rhythm nearly every tapper ends up carrying, cropping up over and over across routines. Get it under your feet and you share a shorthand with tappers the world over; it usually turns up in your first weeks here.
Is tap going to wreck my knees? +
Not in the way we coach it. Proper tap stays light and springs upward from the ankle rather than hammering down through the knee, and the sprung floors take off more of the sting again. We drill that lightness from lesson one.
Does tap really count as a workout? +
More than you'd guess. It's low-impact cardio that lights up the calves and lifts the heart rate while your mind stays welded to the beat — and your legs will have plenty to say about it by the morning.
Where could tap actually take me? +
Straight into the sound every touring show at the Theatre Royal leans on, and onward through our own showcases and performance groups. For a fair few adults, mind, the prize is simply managing those old film-musical rhythms with their own feet at last.
