Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Switch the Body On

A jazz warm-up runs through the spine, ribs and hips, waking up the isolations that make the style read as jazz rather than general dance.

10–25 mins

Isolations and Lines

We drill clean single-part movement — head, shoulders, ribcage, hips — and the long stretched lines that give jazz its polish and its reach.

25–40 mins

Across the Floor

Kicks, chassés, pas de bourrée and a first turn travel corner to corner, building the vocabulary that stitches routines together.

40–50 mins

Learn a Show Phrase

A short combination in proper show style comes together, taught in counts of eight with the accent and attitude built in from the start.

50–60 mins

Perform It, Then Cool Down

We run the phrase full-out with the confidence turned up as if the curtain were open, then stretch the legs and hips before you leave.

About Jazz Classes in Blackpool

Few places are as comfortable with a show as Blackpool, and jazz is the show-floor language — which makes jazz classes in Blackpool feel less like something imported and more like a local accent. This is the resort that kept end-of-pier variety alive when much of the country quietly dropped it, and the Grand Theatre — Frank Matcham's 1894 Grade II* masterpiece, a short walk from the Golden Mile seafront — has been sending song, dance and spectacle up into the lights for well over a century.

For the record, we are an independent class and not connected to the Grand, the Winter Gardens or any production that plays them; we simply borrow the town's long appetite for a proper number. Jazz itself is the technique behind most of that stage work — the sharp isolations that move one part of you at a time, the kicks and leaps, the pirouettes and pencil turns, the jazz walks and the attitude that sells a step to the back row. We teach it cleanly enough for beginners and with enough content to keep improvers stretched.

The class runs from a town-centre studio a tram-stop or two from Blackpool North, so it is easy to reach from the seafront hotels and the North Shore, and only a short ride from the South Shore end. Wear something you can move and turn in, with jazz shoes or clean trainers, and bring water. It is £8 on the day — no term, no membership — so you can slot it in around shifts, family and everything else the week throws up.

Why Choose Jazz in Blackpool?

Built for a Variety Town

Jazz is the technique under Blackpool's whole show tradition, so you are learning the actual language of the stage this resort is known for — inspiration only, no venue affiliation.

Technique and Attitude Together

Clean isolations, real turns and honest lines, but taught with the performance edge that stops jazz looking like an exercise class.

Every Level in One Room

Beginners get moves broken right down while improvers are handed the harder layer of the same combination, so nobody is bored and nobody is lost.

A Proper Workout

Between the kicks, the core work and the across-the-floor travelling, an hour of jazz quietly doubles as strength, stamina and flexibility training.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Finding the Style

In the room

The first month is isolations, posture and the basic jazz walk — learning to move one part cleanly while the rest stays quiet.

By the end

You can hit a sharp isolation on the beat and travel a simple phrase without the arms and legs arguing.

Month 2

Turns and Travel

In the room

First proper turns come in, along with longer across-the-floor sequences that string the vocabulary together.

By the end

You can hold a single pirouette and get across the floor in time with the count.

Months 3–5

Real Routines

In the room

Full combinations with dynamics — the light bits light, the sharp bits sharp — and the show attitude that carries them.

By the end

You can perform a routine to music with the front and the confidence a jazz number needs.

Month 6+

Stage-Ready

In the room

Harder turn sequences, cleaner lines and the finishing detail that separates a nice dancer from a striking one.

By the end

You could step into a variety number and hold your own — which is exactly the town for it.

Jazz in Blackpool FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Blackpool do the jazz classes run? +

From a town-centre studio a couple of tram stops from Blackpool North, so it is straightforward from the seafront hotels, the North Shore and — with a short ride up the Promenade tramway — the South Shore end too.

What does a jazz class cost? +

£8, paid on the day. No term, no membership and no card kept on file — you cover the one class you turn up to, on whatever weeks work for you.

I've never danced — can I really start jazz from scratch? +

Absolutely. Every move is broken down from the first isolation, and the class is built so a complete beginner and a returning dancer can share the same room and both get stretched.

Are you connected to the Grand Theatre or the Winter Gardens? +

No. We are an independent class and hold no affiliation with the Grand, the Winter Gardens or any show that plays them. We reference Blackpool's variety heritage as inspiration, nothing more.

What should I wear and do I need special shoes? +

Something you can stretch and turn in, plus jazz shoes or clean, flat trainers with a little grip. Bring water — you will warm up faster than you expect.

How is jazz different from the other styles you teach? +

Jazz is the show-dance technique — isolations, kicks, turns and performance attitude — that sits under a lot of stage and musical work. It is sharper and more theatrical than street styles and more grounded than ballet.

Is it a good workout? +

Very. The kicks, the core control and the constant travelling across the floor make it a genuine strength, stamina and flexibility session dressed up as a dance class.

Can you teach jazz to a private group? +

Yes — birthdays, hen parties and performance groups can book a session, at our studio or at a venue across Blackpool and the Fylde coast. Put the details on the enquiry form.

Do you run classes for children and teenagers? +

We do. Under-18s dance in age-grouped sessions with DBS-checked teachers, kept separate from the adult class. Add the dancer's age to the form and we will place them correctly.
