Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Shake the day off

We circle the hips and shoulders loose and chant the one-two-three-tap together, so the four-count is living in your ears long before a partner is ever involved.

10–24 min

Just you and the count

Everyone drills the side step and the fourth-beat tap alone first. Once the rhythm is anchored in your own feet, nobody ends up secretly relying on somebody else to keep time.

24–38 min

Hands joined, and rotating

We form couples and change them round the room every few minutes, so leading and following become a matter of sending and reading a clear signal rather than memorising one person's quirks.

38–50 min

A first spin

Follows get an easy right turn and a calm hand-swap to try, each move pulled apart slowly so it arrives without any last-second scramble.

50–60 min

Take it to a full track

We put a genuine bachata song on and join the fragments up, so you finish the hour having danced something whole rather than rehearsed disconnected pieces.

About Bachata Classes in Preston

Bachata grew out of the Dominican Republic's guitar records — songs made for slow, close, two-person dancing — and what makes it so welcoming is how little it asks of a beginner: a sway across four beats, a tap on the last one, and a soft hold you offer to whoever is opposite you. Our Preston sessions guard that plain little engine and only stack body movement and turns on top once the timing runs by itself.

We will give it to you straight: Preston is a city, not a Latin capital, and most of the town's regular salsa-and-bachata dancing runs through established outfits such as Reeders over on Holme Slack Lane rather than a dozen competing socials. That is precisely why a patient weekly beginners' class earns its keep here — it hands you the fundamentals in a low-pressure room before you ever step onto a busier floor. We point people toward established nights to practise; we are not connected to them and we pass on no numbers.

Our teaching room sits in the Fishergate and Friargate stretch of the city centre, a short walk from the Flag Market and the bus station, with a second space out on the Fulwood side. Wherever you are travelling in from — Penwortham, Cottam, Ribbleton, Bamber Bridge or Broughton — one of the two is an easy run, and Preston's West Coast Main Line station keeps the centre reachable without a car.

Why Choose Bachata in Preston?

You never sit still

Partners rotate all the way through the hour, which is the quickest route to improvement and the reason arriving on your own is completely ordinary here.

Timing before decoration

We settle your weight change and your count before a scrap of styling goes on top, because a dependable basic is what makes you genuinely nice to dance with.

A hold that leads gently

Bachata's frame is guided by connection rather than muscle, so first-timers find it far less daunting than they braced themselves for.

Eight pounds, paid on the night

One flat price, no membership and no block to commit to — try a single week and decide for yourself whether it suits you.

Your Bachata Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

First few weeks

Owning the four

The count stops being something you recite in your head and becomes something your feet simply feel, tap and all.

Trusting a signal

As a follow you learn to hang back and wait for the lead; as a lead you learn to offer it early and unmistakably.

02

The bounce arrives

Knees and hips

That soft up-and-down lilt that makes bachata look effortless shows up the moment your legs stop bracing and settle into the beat.

Turns that behave

Right turns, left turns and a neat hand-swap stop feeling like a tangle and start landing where you meant them to.

03

Dancing the actual song

Hearing the build

You start to notice when a track lifts or eases and let your movement reply to it instead of ploughing straight through.

A little shine

Gentle torso and shoulder movement gets layered in — the styling that gives bachata its unmistakable signature.

04

Onto a real floor

Any partner, any track

You can hold your own with a stranger to a song you have never heard, which is the entire point of learning to lead and follow.

Somewhere to spend it

We nudge you toward Preston's established Latin nights so the class grows into a proper hobby rather than an hour on a Tuesday.

Bachata in Preston FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

How much is a class, and are there any contracts? +

Every drop-in is a flat £8, paid on the night. There is no membership, no block booking and no minimum run — you come the weeks you can and skip the ones you cannot.

Can I come without a partner? +

Yes, and most people do. We rotate partners round the room through the hour, so you dance with several people and never need to bring anyone of your own.

I have never danced at all — is that a problem? +

Not in the slightest. The beginners' class assumes no history whatsoever; we start from the side step and the count and build slowly from there.

What should I wear and bring? +

Comfortable clothes you can move in and a clean pair of shoes with a smooth sole so you can turn without gripping the floor. Bring water; everything else we cover.

Where in Preston do the classes run? +

Our main room is in the Fishergate and Friargate part of the city centre, near the Flag Market and the bus station, with a second space on the Fulwood side. The exact address is confirmed when you book.

How do I get there without driving? +

Preston station sits on the West Coast Main Line and is a short walk from the centre, and the bus station is right beside our city-centre room. There is no tram in Preston, so plan around bus and rail; parking nearby fills and closes early on Deepdale matchdays.

What is the difference between salsa and bachata? +

Salsa is quicker and turn-heavy on a circular or slot pattern; bachata is slower, side-to-side across four beats with a softer, closer hold. Beginners often find bachata the kinder first step.

Is there an age range? +

Our beginner classes are aimed at adults, roughly 17 upward, and there is no upper limit — people join in their twenties and in their sixties alike.

How do I book my first class? +

Fill in the enquiry form on this page with your name and a contact number, and we will send back the current day, time and address so you can just turn up.
