Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm and mobile
We ease the spine, ribs and hips into motion with slow circles and drops, waking up the small muscles belly dance leans on before any real movement begins.
Finding the isolations
The heart of the style is moving one part while the rest stays still — a hip drop, a rib slide — and we drill these slowly until your body can separate them on request.
Adding the shimmy
The shimmy layers a fast, relaxed vibration over a steady base; we build it gently so it comes from loose knees rather than tension, which is where beginners usually go wrong.
Arms and frame
Soft, snaking arms frame everything the hips do; we shape them so they float and finish each movement rather than hanging there as an afterthought.
Put it to music
We join the isolations, shimmy and arms into a short routine set to a proper Middle-Eastern rhythm, so you leave having danced something whole.
About Belly Dance Classes in Preston
Belly dance — raqs sharqi at its root — is one of the oldest social dances there is, built on isolations: moving the hips, ribs and torso independently over a steady drum. Our Preston beginners' class teaches those isolations from the ground up, slowly and without judgement, so the movements that look mesmerising become simply things your body knows how to do.
Preston is a genuinely diverse city, and belly dance sits naturally in that mix — it belongs to no single body type, age or background, and our room reflects that. It is also refreshingly low-impact: there is no jumping and no partner, just you, a rhythm and room to move, which is why it suits people who want to dance without the pounding of a high-energy class.
Sessions run from our city-centre studio in the Fishergate and Friargate stretch, a short walk from the Flag Market and the bus station, with a second space on the Fulwood side. People travel in from Cottam, Ribbleton, Penwortham and Bamber Bridge; Preston's West Coast Main Line station keeps the centre easy to reach, with no tram to plan around.

Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First few weeks
Hips that answer
Hip drops and lifts stop needing your full concentration and start happening where you want them, when you want them.
Ribs on their own
You learn to slide and circle the ribcage independently of the hips, the isolation that unlocks everything else.
The shimmy settles
Loose, not forced
The shimmy stops being a tense wobble and becomes a relaxed vibration you can switch on and hold.
Layering up
You begin to shimmy while travelling or moving the arms, stacking movements instead of doing one at a time.
Bringing in the arms
Floating frame
Snaking, unhurried arms start to frame the hips naturally rather than needing to be thought about.
Musical accents
You learn to catch the accents in the drum, letting a hit in the music land as a hit in your body.
Dancing a routine
A whole piece
Isolations, shimmy and arms link into a short routine you can perform to a full track from memory.
Confidence that shows
The posture and poise the dance builds start to follow you off the floor and into the rest of the week.
Belly Dance in Preston FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How much is a class, and am I tied into anything? +
Each class is a flat £8 on the night. No membership, no block booking and no commitment beyond the week you attend.
Do I need to be a particular shape or fitness level? +
Not at all. Belly dance genuinely suits every body, age and level of fitness — it is one of the most inclusive dances there is, and beginners of all kinds start together.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in, ideally fitted at the hips so you can see the movement, and bare feet or soft shoes. A hip scarf helps you feel the isolations but is not needed for a first class.
Do I need any dance experience? +
None. The beginners' class starts from the very first hip drop; everyone in the room is learning the isolations from scratch.
Where in Preston is the class? +
Our studio is in the Fishergate and Friargate part of the city centre, near the Flag Market and the bus station, with a second space on the Fulwood side. The exact address is confirmed when you book.
How do I get there? +
Preston station is on the West Coast Main Line and a short walk from the centre, and the bus station sits beside our city-centre room. There is no tram, so plan by bus, rail or car; central parking fills and closes early on Deepdale matchdays.
Is belly dance actually a good workout? +
Yes — it works the core, hips and posture hard while staying low-impact, so you build strength and control without any jumping or strain.
What ages is it for? +
The class is for adults, roughly 17 and upward, with no upper limit. It is a dance people happily start at any age.
How do I book? +
