Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-12 min

Ground First

We open lying down: spine on the floor, ribs softening, weight sinking through the pelvis. Before a single step travels, you learn where breath and movement meet — slow, quiet, undemanding of anyone.

12-24 min

Give and Rebound

The core exchange of the style — surrender to gravity, then spring back off it. Picture the sweeping concrete balconies of Preston's Brutalist bus station: heavy blocks that soften into an arc. Drop the weight, catch the curve, ride it up again.

24-38 min

Cross the Floor

Phrases carry you the length of the room using spirals, off-balance tilts and level changes. This is where a shy body learns to claim space, and where the plain thrill of moving fast through a room finally clicks.

38-52 min

Make and Respond

Set choreography one week, a guided improvisation task the next. We treat improvisation as composing on the spot, with a clear intention behind every choice — never idle filler to run down the clock.

52-60 min

Settle the Body

Long stretches, unrushed breath and a deliberate stretch of stillness. Contemporary asks you to be genuinely present, so we protect a couple of minutes at the end to let that presence land.

About Contemporary Classes in Preston

Contemporary trades the fixed vocabulary of ballet for movement driven by breath, weight and momentum. Our Preston sessions lean on release technique and improvisation to build a body that can collapse and recover, coil and unwind, and carry as much feeling as force. You will do floor work, you will warm up properly, and you will fairly regularly surprise yourself with something your body already half-knew how to do.

It helps to hold a shape in your mind while you dance, and Preston hands you two of them. The 1969 bus station — one of Britain's largest, Grade II listed and a genuine icon of Brutalism — turns rows of blunt concrete blocks into long, sweeping balcony curves; that is exactly the arc of a rebound. Down at Riversway, the old Albert Edward Dock on the Ribble once ran cargo cranes and lock gates in a steady loading rhythm; that load-drop-swing pulse is the engine of weight-sharing work.

You need no background to start. If you want more, Fever Dance Company runs adult contemporary across Preston and Fulwood, and there is a wider scene beyond that — but our beginners' class is built to take you from nervous first floor-slide to a body that moves with intent, one £8 drop-in at a time.

Why Choose Contemporary in Preston?

Breath-Led, Not Mirror-Led

You work from internal sensation outward, so progress never depends on copying a perfect line. That makes contemporary unusually kind to bodies that felt boxed out by stricter styles.

A Real Release Foundation

Falling and recovering, spiralling and suspending — taught as transferable principles. Take them into any style you dance next and they hold up.

Genuinely Beginner-Sized

Sessions are pitched at first-timers, aged roughly 17 to 75. Nobody is expected to arrive flexible, fit or fearless; the room is built for the person walking in cold.

Central and Reachable

We run near the Fishergate and Flag Market side of the city, minutes from the West Coast Main Line station and the bus station car parks — easy whether you travel in from Fulwood, Penwortham or further out.

Your Contemporary Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Getting Grounded

Weeks 1-3

You meet the floor and stop fighting it. Rolling, sinking, breathing in time with movement — the unglamorous groundwork that every later phrase is built on.

What shifts

The self-consciousness of lying on a studio floor in front of strangers quietly fades, usually faster than anyone expects it to.

02

Finding Flow

Weeks 4-8

Give-and-rebound starts to feel like second nature. You link two or three movements without stalling, and travelling phrases stop being a scramble.

What shifts

Momentum becomes a friend rather than something to brace against — the bus-station curve, not the concrete block.

03

Speaking Through It

Months 3-5

Improvisation tasks stop feeling like a test. You make choices with intention and start recognising your own movement habits, then bending them on purpose.

What shifts

Dance becomes expression rather than replication; you have something to say with it.

04

Dancing Whole

Month 6 onward

Set repertoire and structured improvisation sit comfortably side by side. Longer sequences hold together, and you carry the release principles into anything else you try.

What shifts

You stop thinking of yourself as someone taking a class and start thinking of yourself as someone who dances.

Contemporary in Preston FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What actually is contemporary dance? +

It is a technique built on breath, weight and momentum rather than the fixed positions of ballet. Expect release work, floor sequences and improvisation. In Preston we teach it for expression as much as shape, so it suits people who want to move with feeling, not just accuracy.

Can I join with no dance background at all? +

Yes — that is exactly who the class is for. Everything begins on the floor with breathing and simple weight-shifts, and we build from there. No prior training, splits or fitness level is assumed.

Isn't this the same thing as modern dance? +

They are cousins, not twins. Modern dance describes the early-20th-century pioneers who broke from ballet; contemporary is the broader, later strand that folds in release, improvisation and floor work. Our Preston class sits firmly in that contemporary lane.

Do I have to be flexible before I start? +

No. Flexibility is a slow by-product of turning up, not an entry requirement. We work within your current range and let it open gradually — pushing into a stretch you are not ready for is how people get hurt.

Is there floor work in every session? +

Almost always, yes. Release technique lives on the floor, so bring layers you are happy to roll and slide in. If floor contact is uncomfortable on a given day, we will always offer a standing alternative.

What should I turn up wearing? +

Soft, layered clothing you can move and sweat in, plus bare feet or grippy socks. Leave the hard-soled shoes at home — contemporary is danced with the foot in direct contact with the floor.

What does a class cost in Preston? +

A flat £8 per drop-in session, paid one class at a time. There is no membership, no block booking and no contract — you simply come to the classes you want.

Whereabouts in Preston do you run it? +

On the central Fishergate and Flag Market side of the city, with the exact studio confirmed when you book. It sits within the walkable triangle of the station, bus station and Flag Market, so parking and public transport are both straightforward.

Will contemporary help my other dancing? +

Noticeably. The grounding, weight-awareness and improvisation habits transfer into commercial, heels, lyrical and more — most dancers find their other styles gain depth once they have some contemporary underneath them.
