How Your Belly Dance Party Runs

Arrival and first isolations

Your choreographer arrives, the music starts and the warm-up begins with isolations — moving hips, ribs and shoulders one at a time. It feels strange, then brilliant, and the first group shimmy attempt is reliably the loudest laugh of the weekend.

Building the routine

Hip drops, figure eights, snake arms and travelling steps link into a flowing routine, taught in slow layers so every body keeps up. The bride gets the centre spot and a signature shimmy all of her own.

The drum-solo finale

The classic finish of any belly dance show: a fast drum solo where the whole group shimmies on every beat, filmed on your phones. Coin belts, if you brought them, will be heard in the next postcode.

Why Belly Dance for the Hen Do?

Because belly dance celebrates every single body in the room, exactly as it arrives. There is no jumping, no partner and no dress code — no crop top required, ever — just isolations, shimmies and hip work that feel fantastic at any age and any fitness level. It is low impact and high joy, which makes it one of the kindest possible choices for a mixed group of mums, sisters and school friends.

Your routine draws on raqs sharqi, the classical Egyptian style, with hip drops, figure eights, snake arms and a shimmy-everything drum solo — plus a Shakira-flavoured pop moment if the group wants one. Everything is taught in slow, unhurried layers, the bride takes the centre spot, and the moves genuinely flatter every shape on camera — this is the theme groups pick when they want glamour without a single press-up.

Britain caught the bug long ago: belly dance classes run in every UK city, and the scene throws regular haflas — relaxed party nights where everyone dances and nobody judges. And when Shakira took Hips Don't Lie to UK number one in 2006, an entire generation discovered what a hip shimmy was for.

Hips lead, arms frame — the shimmy sorts out the rest.

Shimmies

The signature move — fast, funny to learn and weirdly addictive. By the finale the group will shimmy on command.

Figure Eights

Smooth, flowing hip patterns that make the whole routine look liquid — and feel like a massage for your lower back.

Snake Arms

Rippling arm waves that photograph beautifully and require precisely zero fitness.

Veil Work

Floaty scarf moments borrowed from classic Egyptian stage shows — bring chiffon scarves and the video doubles in drama.

Drum Solo

The traditional show-stopping finish: rapid percussion, one accent per beat, everybody shimmying at once.

Pop Crossover

A Shakira-style chart moment woven in, for the hens who want their raqs sharqi with a chorus they know.

Belly Dance Facts for the Group Chat

Dance of the east

The style's proper name, raqs sharqi, is Arabic for dance of the east — belly dance is only its western nickname.

Named in Chicago

The English term traces to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, where promoter Sol Bloom translated the French danse du ventre for American crowds.

Golden-age stars

Egyptian cinema icons Samia Gamal and Tahia Carioca made raqs sharqi movie-famous through the 1940s and 50s.

Hips Don't Lie

Shakira's belly-dance-powered single topped the UK chart in 2006 and became one of the best-selling songs of the decade.

Belly Dance Questions, Answered

How does the pricing work for a belly dance hen party?

One flat rate for the whole group: from £140 plus venue hire for an hour, or £165 plus venue for ninety minutes. Six hens or twenty-six, the price stays the same.

Do I need a dancer's stomach for this?

Absolutely not — and nothing needs to be on show. Belly dance is famously welcoming to every body and every age; wear whatever is comfortable and moves with you. The dance was built for real bodies, not gym adverts.

Can the class happen at our accommodation?

Yes — the choreographer comes to your hotel, Airbnb or hired hall in any city we cover, or we can book a partner studio with mirrors. Living-room floor space is usually plenty.

Are coin belts and veils provided?

Props are not supplied, so bring your own — coin belts and chiffon scarves cost a few pounds online, and the jingle alone is worth it. The routine works fine without them; the video is better with them.
